Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

72 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Labour the number of young people who left school in 1990 and are registered as unemployed at the moment.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 71 and 72 together.

The data available to my Department relating to school leavers is derived from the annual survey on the economic status of school-leavers, conducted by the economic and research institute on behalf of the Department. The results of the survey are based on a national sample of approximately 2,000 leavers drawn from the estimated total of 67,000 who leave second-level education annually. The survey does not cover those leaving primary or third level education.

As the survey traces the career paths of leavers approximately one year after they have left school the relevant data regarding school leavers for the academic year 1989-1990 are not yet available. The fieldwork to trace the career paths of this cohort has only begun. The results will not be available until the end of the year.

The number of people who left school each year between 1987 and 1989 and their economic status one year later are as follows:—

I understand that the live register, as compiled for the Department of Social Welfare by the Central Statistics Office, does not allow for the identification of 1990 school-leavers who may be registered as unemployed at employment offices.
