Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Temporary Whole-Time Teachers.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

226 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Education the number of temporary whole-time secondary teachers who are currently employed; if, in respect of these, she will outline (a) the number who have been employed to replace permanent teachers on maternity leave (b) the number who have been employed to replace permanent teachers on career breaks and (c) the other reasons temporary whole-time teachers are employed; and the number who are employed for each of these reasons.

The information requested by the Deputy with regard to numbers of temporary whole-time teachers in secondary schools is not readily available in my Department.

However, while actual figures are not available, I can inform the Deputy in general terms that the vast majority of secondary teachers employed in a temporary whole-time capacity would be replacing teachers who are currently on career breaks. The balance would be required for other reasons — e.g. replacing teachers on extended, unpaid maternity leave; replacing teachers who are on secondment to an approved body; replacing teachers whose sick leave has expired but whose post is held for a period; and replacing teachers who are currently Members of the Oireachtas.
