Gerard Brady

Question:

67 Mr. G. Brady asked the Minister for Finance the number of smuggling offences detected in each of the past five years; if he will estimate the monetary value of goods involved in these offences; and if he will categorise the main commodities.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

Main Commodities involved

1986

6,935

(a) Figures do not include estimated values of goods which are prohibited to be imported. Records of such values are not maintained, and, in general, prohibited drugs are destroyed. The estimated street-value of prohibited goods detected by Customs is £1.0 million in 1989 and £0.5 million in 1990.
