Vol. 409 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prison Conditions.

Seán Ryan

Question:

18 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Justice, with regard to his proposals in the law enforcement package of December 1990, if he will outline the progress which has been made to date regarding the provision of in-cell sanitation in the new unit in Mountjoy Prison for offenders with infectious diseases; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The new unit in Mountjoy Prison, which will provide accommodation and treatment facilities appropriate to the needs of offenders suffering from infectious diseases, including those who are HIV positive, will include in-cell sanitation. This is in accordance with the general policy of providing in-cell sanitation in all new building or major reconstruction projects. Work on the unit in Mountjoy commenced in April of this year and is expected to be completed in about 18 months.
