Vol. 409 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Transport Fleet.

Seán Barrett

Question:

103 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice whether a new post has been created in the Garda depot for a fleet manager; if he will outline the way in which this post was filled and the reason this particular job was not confined to members of the Garda Síochána; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A civilian fleet manager was appointed to Garda headquarters in February 1991. The post was created to provide Garda management with professional expertise and advice in the running of the Garda transport fleet and was filled following an open competition held by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates were required to hold a recognised degree in mechanical or transport engineering and-or have completed a full apprenticeship in the motor trade and be a member of a relevant professional body, e.g. the Institute of the Motor Industry or the Institute of Road Transport Engineers.
