Written Answers. - Leixlip (County Kildare) By-Pass.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

35 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment when he expects the by-pass at Leixlip town, in County Kildare to start and to finish; where access from that road to Leixlip will be sited.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

124 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the current schedule for the implementation of the N4 by-pass in Kilcock and Leixlip, County Kildare; when contracts are likely to be signed; the estimated cost at this stage; the completion date for the contracts involved; the number and locations of bridges, if any, to be provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 124 together.

The Leixlip-Maynooth-Kilcock by-pass is scheduled to commence in 1991 at an estimated cost of £50 million, 1989 prices. The by-pass will be 17.6 km in length and will involve the construction of 11 bridges. There will be bridges at Courtown Road, Laragh Road, Threadstown Road, Rathcoffey Road, Celbridge Road and Leixlip Road; in addition there will be interchanges west of Lucan and at the Straffan Road, an accommodation bridge at Castletown, a pedestrian bridge at Cooldrinagh and a bridge over the Liffey.

The work will be undertaken in two main civil engineering contracts. One of these involves the Liffey bridge at Leixlip together with 5 km of road. It is expected that tenders will be invited for this contract in September 1991 with work scheduled to commence in March 1992. The second contract, which involves the balance of the civil engineering work, has been advertised and the closing date for the receipt of tenders was yesterday. Subject to the evaluation of the tenders received, work on this contract is expected to commence next September. The work project is expected to be completed in early 1995.

Access to Leixlip is to be provided from an interchange which will be located approximately 200 metres west of the existing roundabout on the Lucan by-pass.

There are no proposals before my Department to toll this road.
