Vol. 409 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Honours List.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

1 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach whether there have been any recent developments or discussions with the Opposition Leader in the matter of the introduction of a roll of honour, order of merit or honours list; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I hope to arrange meetings with the other party leaders to discuss this matter during the summer recess.

I thank the Taoiseach for his reply. Will he give some indication as to whether he will investigate comparable honours in other republics in the European community with a view to taking on board some of their recommendations in the drawing up of this list?

That would be a very sensible thing to do.

In view of the fact that this matter has been under discussion in this House from time to time is it possible to give some indication as to the deadline? For example, is it possible that the discussions with the other party leaders might be completed by the end of the summer recess?

I hope to have a discussion with them fairly early in the recess. The Deputy has such a great interest in this matter that I begin to suspect he may have some candidate for this system of honours.

I might have.

The Taoiseach might have a few dozen candidates, especially after the local elections.
