Members of the Permanent Defence Force employed on duties with the FCA are paid special allowances to cover expenses arising in the course of such duties, in addition to travel expenses. These arrangements were examined by the Gleeson Commission in the course of their review of remuneration and conditions of service in the Defence Forces.
The commission recommended rationalisation of the rates of allowances payable to non-commissioned personnel. The rationalisation recommended by the commission has been implemented and came into effect on 1 October 1990.
