Vol. 409 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - FCA Service Medal.

Seán Ryan

Question:

17 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider introducing by way of a special medal a scheme to recognise exemplary conduct and service of members of the Reserve Defence Force.

Members of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil and An Slua Muirí are awarded An Bonn Seirbhíse — the Service Medal — on completing seven years satisfactory service. A bar to the medal is awarded on completing 12 years satisfactory service and a second bar on completing 21 years satisfactory service. There are no proposals for the award of a further medal to members of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil or An Slua Muirí.

Could the award scheme be extended in some shape or form, given that the members of the FCA see themselves as the Cinderella of the Defence Forces? Will the Minister look favourably at extending this scheme and setting up an award for services as outlined?

In view of the Deputy's interest and representations in this regard I will have the matter further examined, but at present there does not appear to be a demand for a further medal. The service medal is awarded on completing seven years satisfactory service. A bar to the medal is awarded on completing 12 years service and a second bar is awarded on completing 21 years.

In view of the Deputy's representations I will have the matter examined again and I will communicate with the Deputy.
