Vol. 410 No. 2

Written Answers. - Places for Mentally Handicapped.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

197 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 and 14 others in his class, who are mentally handicapped, will be let go this week from St. Michael's House and have no places to go to from September 1991; and if he proposes to provide additional places to meet their needs.

The needs of the people referred to by the Deputy have been taken account of in the proposals of the Eastern Health Board planning committee for the development of mental handicap services.

The Eastern Health Board and the voluntary mental handicap agencies in the region are currently developing services for people with mental handicap and their families with the assistance of the additional funding for mental handicap services made available in the 1990 and 1991 budgets.

The Programme for Economic and Social Progress includes a commitment to develop further services for people with mental handicap over the seven years of the programme.
