Vol. 410 No. 4

Written Answers. - Incidence of BSE.

Donal Carey

Question:

49 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has satisfied himself that the incidence of BSE in this country is no longer a threat to our cattle and beef exports.

As the House will be aware, I have consistently maintained that the incidence of BSE is minuscule and the precautions taken are the correct ones. That stance has been gaining support at international scientific fora.

I must point out also that all member states in the EC and most of our third country trading partners, apart from a few important Middle Eastern countries, accept that our cattle and beef are of the highest quality. I will ensure that our efforts continue so as to convince a few remaining third countries that Irish cattle and beef are sound and wholesome. Such efforts have already led to trade being maintained or renewed in many cases.
