Vol. 410 No. 6

Written Answers. - British Army Patrol.

Austin Currie

Question:

45 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will ask for an explanation from the Northern Ireland Office for the presence of a British Army patrol in direct contact with the community and without a police presence at 9 p.m. on Friday, 28 June 1991, at Newtownhamilton, County Armagh; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am grateful to the Deputy for bringing this incident to my attention. On receipt of the Deputy's question, I immediately asked my officials to raise this matter in the Anglo-Irish Secretariat in Belfast and I will be in further communication with the Deputy as soon as possible.

The Deputy will be aware that the Government attach the highest priority to the full implementation of the policy of accompaniment.
