Vol. 410 No. 7

Written Answers. - Storm Damage Grants.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

35 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine if, in the future, he will consider making 100 per cent grants available to local authorities carrying out urgent remedial works to repair storm damage and coastal erosion; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the primary responsibility for coast protection and for remedial works due to storm damage rests with the local authorities, it is appropriate that there should be a local contribution towards the cost of such works. From the variety of legitimate pressing demands on taxpayers resources, there is no immediate prospect of 100 per cent grant-aid for such works.
