Vol. 410 No. 7

Written Answers. - Leitrim Meat Factory.

Edward Nealon

Question:

49 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when he anticipates that the new factory built for Pechanga Limited at Jamestown, County Leitrim, will go into production.

As the Deputy is probably aware, Pechanga Ltd., changed its name to Arax Ltd. and had its cold store approved by my Department in January 1991.

My Department's veterinary officials recently carried out an inspection of the boning hall to ensure compliance with the various EC Directives on intra-Community trade in fresh meat. A number of improvements remain to be carried out, which management has undertaken to have done by the end of the week. When completed a further inspection will take place and I understand that, barring unforeseen difficulties, the boning hall will be recommended for approval.

The commencement date for production at the new boning hall is a matter for decision by the management of the company.
