Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Restrictions on Hungarian Meats Imports.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

252 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason Hungarian salamis and sausages are prohibited from entry to this country; whether these reasons relate to food industry regulations originating in his Department or to EC economic policy and regulations of a more comprehensive kind.

My Department prohibit the importation of meat products from non-EC countries on animal health grounds. Harmonised health rules for import into the Community of meat products from third countries, including Hungary, are in the course of preparation by the EC and when adopted imports of such products into Ireland will be permitted subject to these rules.
