Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Staffing of Centres for the Unemployed.

Tony Gregory

Question:

277 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Labour if he will give details of his response to the submission from the Scheme Workers Alliance (details supplied).

The submission from the Scheme Workers Alliance related to the staffing of centres for the unemployed under the social employment scheme. Many of the issues raised were a day to day matter for FÁS.

I pointed out in my reply that there were just under 11,000 participants on the scheme at the end of September and that the end of year target was 12,500. Expenditure on the scheme this year will be £73 million approximately of which £61 million will come from the Exchequer with the balance coming from the European Social Fund.

Unfortunately European Social Fund assistance will not be available for the social employment scheme in 1992 so it is not possible to say at this stage what the level of activity will be next year. This will be decided in the context of the 1992 Estimates discussions.
