Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Dick Spring

Question:

361 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will outline (a) the number and (b) areas deployed, of full-time non-clerical Civil Service positions in his Department, previously held by the categories listed following that have been replaced by private contractors in the last five years: (1) messengers and night-watchmen, (2) messengers, (3) van drivers and (4) cleaners.

The only full-time, non-clerical position in my Department in any of the categories listed that has been replaced by a private contractor in the last five years is that of a nightwatchman in Aras Mhic Dhiarmada, Store Street, Dublin 1, who retired in 1990. The duties which he performed are now undertaken by a private security firm which provides a very efficient, expert and cost-effective service.
