Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Garda Headquarters.

Peter Barry

Question:

389 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice if the most modern radio and technological equipment will be installed in the new Garda headquarters in Cork; and if the building is properly designed to facilitate this equipment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All new Garda stations built are fitted out with up-to-date radio and other technological equipment and Anglesea St. is no exception. The Garda authorities are at present considering the enhancement of the radio system for Cork city by, inter alia, the provision of a computerised command and control system. When finalised, the Garda proposals will be assessed by the Garda Radio Advisory Committee, an expert group which advises on and oversees the development of the Garda radio network, before a decision on the precise type of system to be provided is taken.

The station in Anglesea St. has been designed so as to facilitate the installation of the necessary radio and other technological equipment.

Question:

390 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice the reason the windows in the new Garda headquarters in Cork have to be replaced before the Garda station is opened.

Four windows on the south wall of the communications room in the new station at Anglesea St. have been lengthened in response to representations from the local gardaí that the previous window design did not allow adequate natural light into the room. It was possible to make this adjustment while remaining within the overall budgetary figure for the project.
