Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inchicore (Dublin) Housing Estate.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

409 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received an application from Dublin Corporation for funds for the refurbishment of St. Michael's Estate, Inchicore, Dublin 8; and whether, in order to understand the urgency of the problem, he will agree to visit the estate together with local TDs and councillors, and representatives of Dublin Corporation and his Department before the end of October 1991.

An application for funding under the remedial works scheme has been received and is being examined; a decision on the eligibility under the scheme of the works proposed will be made as soon as possible. However, the priority rating accorded to this estate by the corporation vis-à-vis other estates, the financial commitments on the corporation's eight approved projects and the overall high demand by local authorities for funding under the remedial works scheme would not allow the designation of St. Michael's Estate at this stage, even if the works proposed are deemed eligible under the scheme. The management, maintenance and improvement of their housing estates and the fixing of priorities between different estates are matters for the corporation in which it would not be appropriate for the Minister to intervene.
