Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Alcohol Advertising and Promotion Guidelines.

Gerard Brady

Question:

517 Mr. G. Brady asked the Minister for Health if he will implement the same stringent advertising and promotional guidelines in respect of alcohol as has already been done with tobacco.

My Department introduced stringent controls on tobacco advertising and sponsorship, as a result of the serious health risks associated with tobacco use. Unlike tobacco, the health risks in the case of alcohol are mainly associated with its abuse rather than its use.

Because of their serious concern regarding the abuse of alcohol, the Government requested the Advisory Council on Health Promotion to develop a comprehensive national alcohol policy. It will examine the use and abuse of alcohol on a broad basis, including the question of advertising.
