Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

573 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cavan is not being called immediately for orthodontic treatment; if, in view of the embarrassment caused to this person as a result, he will consider recommending her to a private orthodontist and instruct his Department to cover the costs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Children are assessed and prioritised for orthodontic treatment in accordance with the severity of their orthodontic condition. Priority in the provision of treatment is given to children in the categories requiring most urgent attention.

The person referred to by the Deputy was assessed by the health board's dental service for the provision of orthodontic treatment. She has been listed by the health board for the provision of orthodontic treatment and while she has not been placed in the categories requiring most urgent attention every effort will be made by the health board to provide treatment for her at the earliest opportunity.

A further special allocation of £1 million has been made to health boards in 1991 to cover the continuing costs of orthodontic treatments and to bring a substantial number of new cases into treatment.
