Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Lough Foyle Shell Fishing Industry.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

147 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make a statement on the shell fishing industry in Lough Foyle; and if he has satisfied himself that enough is being done to protect the industry against the threat of pollution.

There is a substantial and valuable shellfishery in Lough Foyle. The shellfish are regularly monitored by my Department so as to ensure suitability for human consumption.

My Department play an active role in liaising with the relevant local authorities in the making by them of decisions or land-based discharges which would impinge on the shellfish sector. Similarly, full account is taken of the interests of the shellfish sector in deciding, or advising, on proposed dumping or dredging operations.

I am aware of concern about possible threats to this industry from pollution and I can assure the Deputy that any threats will be fully assessed.
