Vol. 411 No. 5

Written Answers. - Control of Pit Bull Terriers.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

111 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if the measures taken to control the breeding, sale and keeping of pit bull terriers are satisfactory with particular reference to the safety of children where such animals are concerned.

Under the Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991, pit bull terriers must be securely muzzled and kept on a strong leash or chain not exceeding one metre in length by a person over 16 years of age whenever they are in a public place. I am having a Bill drafted which will provide wider powers to more effectively deal with the problem of dangerous dogs.
