Vol. 411 No. 5

Written Answers. - Expenses of Local Authority Members.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

117 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment when he proposes to bring section 51 of the Local Government Act, 1991 into operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Local Government Act, 1991, is being brought into effect on a phased basis by way of a series of commencement orders as necessary regulations are made and other preparatory action taken. Section 51 which relates to expenses of local authority members and representation of local authorities at conferences will, as part of this ongoing commencement process, be brought into effect as soon as possible. In this connection, my Department have initiated consultations with the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland and the General Council of Councils with regard to possible arrangements under this provision.
