Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Description.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

56 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the reasons an adequate description of the new junior certificate arrangements, by way of readings and other materials, was not available in the Irish language.

Irish versions of the syllabuses have been provided in the first phase subjects for the junior certificate viz. science; history; geography; business studies; art, craft and design; Spanish, Italian and technology.

In relation to the five phase II subjects, Irish versions of the syllabuses have been prepared for home economics and materials technology (wood).

Work is at an advanced stage in preparing the Irish version of the syllabuses in music, technical graphics and typewriting and keyboarding and also on guidelines in Irish for the phase I subjects. Every effort is being made to ensure the necessary material in Irish is made available as soon as possible.
