Vol. 411 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Defence Property Sales.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

3 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Defence the properties which have been sold by his Department over the past 12 months; the price secured; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A total of £1,348,713 in revenue was derived from sales of properties by my Department in 1990. The anticipated revenue from sales of properties in 1991 is £500,000. As a very large number of transactions are involved, I will communicate further details to the Deputy as soon as possible. The properties for which sale contracts have been entered into this year are: 6.3 acres at Coolmoney, County Wicklow; 4.76 acres at Kilpedder, County Wicklow; 1.9 acres adjoining the new motorway at the Curragh, County Kildare; Officers' Quarters, Clonmel, County Tipperary; 14 married quarters (purchase scheme). The total revenue to be derived from the above is £223,500.

The question of the disposal of properties which become surplus to my Department's requirement is kept under continuous review.

Has Collins Barracks been sold?

Are there plans for the sale of the barracks? If so, have there been discussions in relation to the sale?

In December 1988 the Government decided that Collins Barracks, Dublin, should be disposed of and arrangements for its evacuation are currently in progress.

Have offers been made to the Minister's Department in relation to a proposed sale? If so, have there been discussions or have contacts been made in relation to such a sale?

I suggest that the Deputy puts down a separate question in that regard because I am not certain if hard and fast proposals for the sale of this property have been put forward. As the Deputy knows, before the barracks is put up for sale arrangements must be made to have the personnel and operations in the barracks relocated. Arrangements have already been made regarding investment in McKee Barracks and others to provide for the relocation of the personnel at present in Collins Barracks.

Deputy Taylor-Quinn rose.

If Question No. 4, in the name of Deputy Taylor-Quinn, is to be dealt with it must be taken now.

I have one short supplementary.

In that case I may not be able to deal with Question No. 4.

Is the current evacuation of Collins Barracks with a view to selling the property?

A decision was taken in December 1988 to sell the property. In the meantime arrangements had to be put in place to accommodate the people stationed there.
