Vol. 411 No. 8

Written Answers. - Off-Road Dumpers.

Ivan Yates

Question:

98 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals to restrict or ban the operations of dumper machines or trucks which are hydraulically operated for haulage on the roads for any considerable distance in view of the safety requirement and the accident record of such vehicles; and if he will make a full statement on the matter.

I understand that the vehicles referred to are commonly known as off-road dumpers. Under existing regulations, such dumpers can generally operate on a public road only under a special permit issued by the relevant road authority.

I will review the adequacy of the existing regulations when I recieve a report from the Garda Síochána on the recent fatal accident involving such a dumper in County Wexford.
