Question:

54 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the amount in fines imposed as a result of arrests made by the Naval Service in each of the last three years.

Fines imposed to date by the courts in respect of arrests made by the Naval Service in each of the last three years are by year of arrest as follows: 1988, £598,037; 1989, £452,312; 1990, £727,861. A significant number of arrests from each of the years in question still remain to be dealt with by the courts.

The total amount received each year by way of fines, irrespective of year of arrest, for the years 1988 to 1991 (to date) are as follows: 1988, £788,463; 1989, £584,610; 1990, £392,007 (to date).
