Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Service Reform.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

32 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he has any plans for public service reform.

The process of reform in the public service is on-going and is being undertaken on a number of fronts. The constraints in recent years on staffing and financial resources in the public service have necessarily restricted the range of reform, although they have also given added inpetus to improved efficiency and effectiveness.

The main elements of the current programme of reform are the continued development of administrative budgets for Departments; departmental scrutinies by the efficiency audit group and proposals, to be announced shortly, for changes in the role of the Comptroller and Auditor General designed to increase the effectiveness of his office.
