Question:126 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the average weekly cost of keeping people in prison.

I refer the Deputy to my reply of 9 July 1991 to Question No. 99. The estimated annual cost of the operation of the prison system per head of the prisoner population in 1990 was approximately £31,000. This corresponds to an estimated weekly cost of about £600.
