Question:

52 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details of the number of Irish companies/research institutions which have applied for and been accepted into the EUREKA research programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 49 and 52 together.

Twelve Irish organisations have applied for and been accepted into the EUREKA research programme. The projects in which these organisations are involved have a total value of £240 million of which the Irish share is £6.58 million. Of the 12 participating institutions, there are seven industrial companies, three universities and two State institutions.

The projects with Irish involvement comprehend the following areas of technology: environment, materials, manufacturing technology, electronics, biotechnology, food technology and software.
