Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Southern Health Board Ophthalmic Service.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

172 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Health if she will investigate the long delay being experienced by patients awaiting optical examinations in County Kerry; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The provision of ophthalmic services to eligible persons in the Kerry area is the responsibility of the Southern Health Board. I have been informed by the board that the number of children, including new cases and recalls, on the waiting list for ophthalmic services in County Kerry is 419 and that the maximum waiting period for services is eight months. Approximately 50 per cent of children are deemed to be medically urgent and are seen within six weeks.

The number of adults including new cases and recalls on this waiting list is 695 and the maximum waiting time is six months. Cases deemed medically urgent are seen within eight weeks.

Frank Crowley

Question:

173 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Health the reason for the long delay which exists for those who have applied for ophthalmic treatment from the Southern Health Board who, in some cases have to wait up to fifteen months for an appointment; if anything can be done to alleviate this problem; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have asked the Southern Health Board for a report on the ophthalmic service in their area. My understanding is that there has been considerable improvement in this service as a result of the provision of additional ophthalmic sessions and that waiting lists are being kept under regular review by the board and each patient is given priority according to his/her medical need.
