Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Overpayments to Teachers.

Richard Bruton

Question:

185 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the fact his Department are pursuing arrears of overpayment to teachers over periods that run far beyond the normal statute of limitations period for tax arrears or other similar payments; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that my Department's policy is to make every reasonable attempt to recover moneys overpaid. Each case will have different underlying circumstances and consideration is given to many factors.

However, the possibility that a person who has been overpaid may invoke the statute of limitations does not pre-empt my Department's attempts to recover public funds.
