Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - MMDS Transmission.

John Connor

Question:

210 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if MMDS multichannel television transmission has commenced service in Counties Longford and Roscommon from a transmitter sited on Slieve Bawn in County Roscommon; and the reason, arising from his meeting with the Roscommon/Longford Anti Microwave Group on 16 November 1990 where he promised to have further discussions with this committee on the dangers of MMDS, he has not met this committee.

The licensed MMDS operator has recently commenced transmissions in Counties Longford and Roscommon from the site in question.

The meeting, to which I believe the Deputy is referring, was between officials of my Department and a delegation representing residents of the Tonabrocky area of Galway. That delegation included two members of a group opposed to MMDS from Roscommon/Longford. The meeting was followed up with an exchange of correspondence with the Tonabrocky group, in which a second meeting was offered but was not pursued.

As I indicated in my reply to a question by the Deputy on 30 November 1990, (columns 1802-1803, Volume 402, No. 8 of the Official Report), on the basis of expert advice available to me on this issue I am satisfied there is no cause for concern.
