Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cigarette Vending Machines.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

104 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the fact that cigarette vending machines, most often found in public houses, are not issuing change to customers who have to pay approximately four pence over the shop price; whether this type of overcharging can be prevented; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Consumer Information Act, 1978, provides that anyone supplying goods who gives a false or misleading indication of price is guilty of an offence. The Director of Consumer Affairs has the power to prosecute such offences.
