Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Costs to Coeliac Sufferers.

James Leonard

Question:

105 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the fact that coeliac sufferers have to pay up to £3 per loaf of bread; and if so, the action he proposes to remedy this situation.

As the Deputy will be aware, since the National Prices Commission was disbanded in 1986, the policy of successive Governments has been not to apply centralised price control. Therefore in the absence of official information, I am not in a position to comment meaningfully on the prices being paid for individual products. In the specific case of bread used by coeliac patients, I understand from my colleague the Minister for Health that certain facilities under the Health Acts may be applicable where the use of such a product is medically prescribed.
