Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Blackrock (Dublin) Garda Station.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

131 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the up-to-date position regarding proposals to replace Blackrock Garda station with a new building; his views on whether the existing working conditions for gardaí in the station are adequate; if he is satisfied that the conditions of the cells meet the requirements of the regulations for the treatment of persons in custody; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda station in Blackrock is in need of refurbishment and expansion. As I indicated in reply to Question No. 125 on 13 November 1991 and Question No. 115 on 19 November 1991, plans are being prepared by the Office of Public Works to build a major extension to the Garda station at Blackrock and completely renovate the existing building. It is not possible, at this stage, to say when construction will commence but there will be no avoidable delay.

In the meantime, some interim works, including the provision of new heating facilities, are being carried out to the cells in Blackrock Garda station.
