Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Kildare Road Improvements.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

116 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if sufficient funds will be made available to Kildare County Council in 1992 to enable the council to carry out the much needed road improvements on main and county roads which have been deferred due to lack of finance; if such allocations will have regard to the urgent needs of the county based on population expansion and volume of vehicular traffic: and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Responsibility for the improvement and maintenance of non-national roads rests with the road authority concerned and the cost of such works falls to be financed by the authority from their own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants provided annually by my Department for works on such roads.

In the case of Kildare County Council a total of £1,868,000 was allocated by way of discretionary grants for regional and county roads in 1991, including a supplementary grant of £500,000 for improvement works because of the special needs of the county.

The discretionary grant allocation for Kildare in 1992 will be determined with due regard to the overall level of funds available for this purpose and the competing cliams of other authorities.
