Vol. 413 No. 7

Written Answers. - Elective Surgery.

William Cotter

Question:

38 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Health if she is willing to introduce a maximum waiting time for elective surgery; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The admission of a patient to hospital is a clinical decision for the consultant in charge of the case. The maximum waiting period for elective surgery will vary greatly depending on the precise medical condition of the individual patient. Waiting lists are kept under review and priority is given to urgent cases. Should a patient's condition be causing concern, it is open to his or her general practitioner to contact the consultant with a view to expediting matters.
