Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Private Afforestation.

Phil Hogan

Question:

173 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Energy if he will review the premium being paid to farmers engaged in private afforestation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The highest rate of premium payable to farmers who afforest their land is at the maximum permissible under EC Regulation 1609/89 which is the legislation currently in force. A review of the premium will depend on what changes in legislation are adopted by the council of Ministers, the financing arrangements introduced by new legislation, and experience in operating the present premium and grant schemes which provide attractive incentives for private afforestation.
