Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Amending Legislation.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

215 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will introduce amending legislation to give local authorities more effective powers in closing down piggeries in residential areas and if, having regard to two incidents (details supplied), he will indicate the sort of steps he proposes to take.

I have no proposals to introduce legislation on the lines mentioned by the Deputy. However, I would refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 14, 59 and 105 of 23 October 1991 which outlined details of proposed increases in the penalties set out in the Public Health (Ireland) Act, 1878, in relation to public health nuisances and for breaches of by-laws made by local authorities.
