Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Shercock (Cavan) New National School.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

48 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education the reason notice of issue to tender has not been received by the parents' association of Shercock national school in County Cavan; if he will give a commitment to the issue of tender; the date when it will be made; and if he will specify a proposed month for commencement of work on the building of a new school at Shercock.

William Cotter

Question:

241 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education if he will outline, in relation to an application for a new national school for Shercock, County Cavan, (1) the date the application was received by his Department, (2) the current status of the application and (3) when he proposes to sanction the placing of tenders for this project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 48 and 241 together.

In 1983 a site was offered by the school authorities for the proposed new national school at Shercock, County Cavan. Tender documents were prepared but it was not possible to proceed with the project as planned because of my Department's policy introduced in 1987 of concentrating the available capital resources on essential classroom accommodation and other basic facilities. In 1989 it was agreed that the new school should proceed in accordance with the policy outlined and tender documents for this project are now virtually completed. The question of the invitation of tenders arises for consideration in the context of the 1992 budgetary situation. Until the capital allocation for primary schools' building has been established, I will not be in a position to say when tenders will be invited or a contract placed.
