Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Special Classes Teacher Statistics.

Michael Ferris

Question:

66 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the total number of teachers of people with a mental handicap for whom his Department pay salaries in each of the years 1983 to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At present there are 524 teachers employed in 65 special schools for mildly and moderately mentally handicapped children. In addition, there are 164 teachers employed in special classes for mildly and moderately mentally handicapped children which are attached to ordinary national schools.

The format in which the information in previous years is kept does not provide for the ready identification of the different categories of teachers in the special education area.
