Question:

138 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice if his Department has approved of the second phase of reconstruction works at Clonmel Courthouse, County Tipperary; when this work will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

144 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Justice the amount of money allocated, to date, for the refurbishment of the courthouse in Clonmel, County Tipperary; when additional finance will be made available and the approximate date; when all necessary works will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 138 and 144 together. The arrangement whereby my Department recoups to local authorities the full capital cost of approved major courthouse renovation projects was introduced only this year. Under that arrangement a total of £23,000 has been recouped to Tipperary (South Riding) County Council to date in respect of professional fees related to the planning of Phase II of the Clonmel courthouse restoration project. Phase I of the project predated the new arrangement and was financed by the county council them selves with the assistance of local loans fund borrowing.

The building in question is one of a number of courthouses throughout the country which require renovation. Because of the limited availability of financial resources, priorities have to be established between the different courthouses requiring attention. I cannot indicate at this stage what priority can be given to Phase II of the project.
