John Bruton

Question:

150 Mr. J. Bruton, Mr. J. Mitchell, Miss Flaherty, Mr. Connor and Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment if he has available any information on the levels of pesticide residues in drinking water in Ireland; and if any standards exist on levels which are considered unacceptable.

The European Communities (Quality of Water Intended for Human Consumption) Regulations, 1988, specify maximum admissible concentration values of 0.1 micrograms per litre for pesticides measured singly and 0.5 micrograms per litre for total pesticide residues in water. It is a matter for sanitary authorities to ensure that the quality standards set in the regulations are met. No authority has provided any evidence to my Department which exceeds the standards for single or total pesticides.
