Vol. 414 No. 6

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations with South Africa.

Enda Kenny

Question:

103 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if it is proposed to open an Irish Embassy in South Africa; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland's network of diplomatic relations, both resident and non-resident, is small and must remain so for the foreseeable future, given our limited financial and personnel resources. Possibilities for its extension are examined from time to time in the light of our national and international interests and the availability of the necessary resources. It is established practice in regard to diplomatic relations to proceed only by agreement between the countries concerned. Announcements are made by agreement at the appropriate time and it would be contrary to international practice to speculate publicly in advance of any such announcement.
