The development is being accomplished in two stages. Phase I was completed in 1990 and Phase II is scheduled for completion in early 1992.
The details of the works involved in each of these phases are as follows:
Phase I
1. Dredging approach channel and creating inner basin to facilitate landings from the current fleet.
2. The building of a quay wall to alleviate congestion and improve access for off-loading of fish catches, etc.
3. The building of a breakwater to protect the inner basin.
4. Land reclamation.
Phase II
5. The building of a quay wall providing a berthing depth of 5.0m.
6. The building of a breakwater to provide a sheltered basin.
7. The building of a new slipway.
8. A public marina infrastructure at the new harbour development.
In addition to these works moneys were also expended on site investigations and design studies. The main consultants employed were Hydraulics Research Laboratory, University College Cork, Irish Geotechnical Services Limited, EOLAS — The Irish Science and Technology Agency, Survey Management and Design, ESB International Consulting Engineers, Office of Public Works, Posford Duvivier Consulting Engineers and Irish Sub-Sea Industries Diving Consultants.
The project was carried out by a combination of contract and direct labour. The works executed by contract consisted of one large dredging and reclamation contract carried out by Holland Dredging Co. (Ireland) Limited and a number of small subcontractors (paving, etc.). The rest of the work was carried out by direct labour which can be categorised under the headings of plant, materials and labour.
The approximate breakdown for each year of the way the funds were spent is given under various headings in Table 2 below:

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to state my satisfaction with the investment to date on this project. I am sure the Deputy will agree that the provision of such infrastructure will contribute in a very positive way to the local economy.
