Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Retrieval of Salmon Cage.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

122 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a salmon cage owned by a company (details supplied) was washed up on the Kerry coastline on 25 November 1991; and, if so, if he will give details of (a) the action and (b) the investigations that have been carried out.

I have fully investigated the incident raised by the Deputy. I am happy that my Department was kept fully informed from the outset by the company in question of all matters related to the incident. An empty transport cage, that is, a unit not used for fish production purposes, broke free of its moorings on-site on 24 November last and subsequently came to shore.

The company had the unit removed from the shore by helicopter within three days of the occurrence and it is now back in position on site. I am satisfied that the matter was dealt with most expeditiously by the company and that no escapes of fish took place.
