Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Career Break Scheme.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

172 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education if it is possible, under the regulations governing the career break scheme, for vocational teachers to resume their employment with a vocational education committee during the course of an academic year; if not, if he will amend the scheme to include this provision; if a career break can be approved by a decision of the chief executive officer of the vocational education committee; and, if not, if ministerial sanction must be secured before the career break can take effect.

The terms of the approved scheme allows teachers to resume their teaching duties at the commencement of a school year following completion of their career break. No derogation from the terms of the scheme is allowed in individual cases and I have no plans at present to amend the scheme.

The matter of granting career breaks to teachers in accordance with the terms of the scheme is one for the vocational education committee concerned and the question of ministerial approval does not arise.
