Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Liability Insurance Statistics.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

99 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline (a) the total amount of insurance premiums paid to various insurance companies in respect of public liability insurance in each of the past ten years and (b) the total cost of claims under the public liability heading for this period; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information sought by the Deputy on premiums paid to insurance companies in respect of public liability insurance is not available. Premiums are included in the Insurance Annual Report (Blue Book) under the heading of "Liability Insurance Business", but this would also include employers' liability, product liability and professional indemnity premiums. In regard to claims costs the following table details the total estimated public liability claims costs by insurers for the ten accident years to 1990.
